Residency: Introduction and History
Our objective is to provide facilities for artists to easily start their projects and offer a community in which they can participate as much as they like.
As a member of ResArtis, Residency Unlimited, TransArtists and China Residencies, we are committed to the promotion of multicultural arts dialogue within an immersion setting.
Red Gate assists all participants to connect with the art scene, meet local Chinese artists and to source art materials. We provide the necessary support and encouragement to help you get the most out of your stay here. We help get you settled, show you around, tell you where to buy the best Peking Duck, which part of the Great Wall not to go to, and where and when the latest openings are. All residents are invited to Red Gate Gallery events, including private dinners after the openings.
The Red Gate Care Package covers airport pickup, a welcome packet with everything from local maps, guide books, and a taxi guide, orientation, internet hook-up and local phone, as well as a welcome dinner for you to meet the other residents. In addition, we also keep all our residents up to date on gallery openings and other occasions. We are here for our residents regarding any concerns or needs that they may have during their stay.
The Red Gate community is so engaged and I formed lifelong friendships with some of the fellow residents and the other artists living in Feijiacun. It is an excellent introduction to the art community in Beijing. Red Gate Gallery is doing vital and honorable work in China connecting Chinese and international artists together and supporting the art industry. A highly recommended and very unique experience.
Red Gate Gallery is supporting the residency programs of Associação Cultural Videobrasil, Asia New Zealand Foundation, Cultural Forum of Austria, Davidoff Art Initiative, Goethe-Institut China, and Red Mansion Foundation.
Our program is managed on a not-for-profit basis by Red Gate Gallery. Though Red Gate covers the management and maintenance of all facilities, we are unable to cover the actual costs of renting or providing other forms of financial support, such as a stipend for living expenses, materials or airfare. As there is currently no funding available in China for initiatives like ours, participants are expected to cover the costs of living, studios, and accommodation whilst Red Gate provides all the necessary support to make your time here fruitful and enjoyable.
Residents come from overseas by funding themselves or seeking funding from arts organizations in their own country. We work with artists who can organize their own funds and or have received grants to cover their residency. In addition, we are partnered with multiple cultural organizations that have the interest and resources to send artists here. Applicants are encouraged to seek funding from relevant organizations in their own country. Once accepted, Red Gate will provide letters of support to assist with grant applications.
