Before the invention of photography a portrait was the only way to record the appearance of someone.

But portraits have always been more than just a record. They have been used to show the power, importance, virtue, beauty, wealth, taste, character or other qualities of the sitter.

At later time, photography became the most important medium of traditional portraiture, bringing what was formerly an expensive luxury product affordable for almost everyone.

“37 x 33 cm – The Third”, the third edition of this format includes for the first time as well two photographers within the very eclectic range of artists.

For this exhibition, like before, we asked artists to paint a portrait at a certain size. The medium and the form of expression is completely left to the artists. As the size is rather unusual, all of the works have been created just for this exhibition. (Excluding the photography).

What is different about other exhibitions in this case, is that we are rather choosing the artist for her/his style and ability, than a particular painting, because we do not know the final painting which will be submitted. This is one of the many excitements we are experiencing during the development of the exhibition.

The outcome is surprising and a fantastic variation of very good portraiture.
