Curator Foreword

There are huge differences in individual life forms between peoples of the world, causing a hundred flowers to bloom. Every artist is searching for ways of creative expression based on individual experience, using the work to pursue and experience the spiritual implications of art. People with different experiences and cultural backgrounds may have very different views and understandings of art. However, as the product of the human spirit, art also has a certain degree of connectivity. The spiritual level of the connection, thus forming the universal value of human civilization. It is this universal value that enables art to have the common basis and internal structure of a worldwide language, and to communicate beyond the differences of different times, regions, nationalities and religions.

As a dialectical proposition, the “boundary of art and culture" has been widely concerned and explored by many practitioners. Art has no boundaries, but due to the limitations of human cognition, there are still unexplored areas. The boundary here not only includes the tangible boundary of individual experience, style, subject matter or media, but also refers to the intangible boundary of cultural thought. Contemporary art, which has already entered the context of globalization, needs more cross-regional and cross-border dialogue and communication.

Founded in 1991 by Australian Mr. Brian Wallace, Red Gate Gallery, the first contemporary art gallery in China and the oldest one in existence, has been committed to cross-cultural international communication of art.

Curated by Xie Tian, this exhibition brings together twelve outstanding artists from different countries and different ages. Through their wonderful works of various forms, audiences can feel the different characteristics and styles presented by their creation, and experience contemporary art free of borders. People's cognition and exploration of contemporary art is actually a process of breaking boundaries, deconstruction and reconstruction. In this process, there are some cultural factors that collide, intersect and fuse with each other, deconstruct the old mode and form, break the boundary, and generate new art and civilization.
