September 5, 2026, Phénix Varbanov recreated his distinctive creative method in its entirety for all who stepped into the exhibition Seamless: Phénix Varbanov’s Theatre of Xuan Paper, through a live performance of repeated folding and ink-spraying.
这位在巴黎、索菲亚与北京之间游牧了大半生的艺术家，以宣纸为剧场，通过裂痕、结构与水墨构筑的视觉张力，进行着一场静默却极具创造力的实验。
Having lived a nomadic existence for most of his life between Paris, Sofia, and Beijing, Phénix takes Xuan paper as his theatre. Through the visual tensions generated by fissure, structure, and ink, he stages a silent yet profoundly generative experiment.
《非折叠——宋小松的纸本剧场》是宋小松在红门画廊举办的首次个人展览。现场展出作品均为《结构》系列的纸本水墨作品。
本次展览策展人萧煌认为“在宋小松的画面中，墨色不再被温和地“写”在纸面上，而是伴随折叠、压入、撞击与撕开被重新组织出来。我们既能读出中国美学对虚实气韵的精准控制，又能感受到西方抽象表现主义中身体行动的强度。水墨被置于现代性的结构张力之中，在冲突中妥协，在撕裂中实现共生。”
Seamless: Phénix Varbanov’s Theatre of Xuan Paper marks Phénix Varbanov‘s first solo exhibition at Red Gate Gallery. All the works on view belong to his Structure series, executed in ink on xuan paper.
Xiao Huang, curator of the exhibition, observes: ” In Phénix’s compositions, ink is no longer gently “written” upon the surface of the paper; it is reorganized through folding, pressing, striking, and tearing. Within this labor of physical force and material confrontation, one can perceive both the precise control of void, substance, and qiyun in Chinese aesthetics, and the intensity of physical action associated with Western Abstract Expressionism. Ink is placed within the structural tension of modernity: negotiating conflict and achieving coexistence through rupture.”
本次展览的学术主持、曾与宋小松合作多年的丁韵秋女士表示：”宋小松的作品在东西方文化的交融中，找到了专属于他的视觉语言。中国朴素世界观中的“阴阳”“天然气”都影响着他的创作观念与实践方法。他为观众呈现了一条通向自然万物的视觉指引。”
Ding Yunqiu (Mimi Ding), academic curator of the exhibition, who has collaborated with Song for many years, remarks: “In the fusion of Eastern and Western cultures, Song Xiaosong has found a visual language that is entirely his own. The yin–yang polarity and the notion of qi in the plain-spoken worldview of Chinese tradition have shaped both his creative ideas and his working methods. He offers viewers a visual guide that leads toward all things in nature.”
时值红门画廊成立 35 周年，本次展览作为 798 艺术节平行展，吸引了大批国内外艺术爱好者到场观展。宋小松突破传统中国水墨范式的创作手法令观众耳目一新，大家纷纷赞叹作品中传递宇宙、星河、山川、冰原意象的独特视觉语言。
Marking Red Gate Gallery’s 35th anniversary and serving as a parallel exhibition for the 798 Art Festival, the show has drawn numerous art lovers from China and abroad. Visitors, astonished by Phénix’s approach of breaking the conventions of traditional Chinese ink painting, have praised the visual language that evokes impressions of the cosmos, starry skies, mountains and rivers, and icefields.
