- 移植(1990年代至2000年代初):艺术驻留机制进入中国;
- 嫁接(2001年以后):驻留机制在地方文化与本土实践中转化;
BEIJING, 11 October 2026 — Red Gate Gallery has opened Origins of Artist Residencies in China: Another Pathway to Contemporary Chinese Art, a group exhibition examining how the artist residency model arrived in China, how it was transformed in local contexts, and what it has meant for the country’s contemporary art ecosystem. Co-curated by Dr. Hu Chao and Brian Wallace, founder of Red Gate Gallery, the exhibition takes up a subject that has rarely been examined systematically in the art history of contemporary China.
The exhibition unfolds in three chapters, each marking a distinct phase:
- Transplantation1990s–early 2000s: the residency model enters China
- Graftingfrom 2001 onward: residencies take new forms in local contexts
- Myceliumsince 2009: residencies grow into an open network
Combining physical display with an online resource, the exhibition presents works spanning the 1990s to the present. All participating artists have extensive residency experience, and a number of works are drawn from the Collection of Brian Wallace, tracing how residencies in different periods have inspired and shaped artistic practice. Alongside the exhibition, the gallery has launched Artist Residencies in China Mainland, a database compiled by the Red Gate Gallery team and free to browse on the gallery’s website. It catalogues currently operating residency organizations and serves as a reference for artists, researchers and practitioners in China and abroad, including those considering residency applications.
At the opening, Chinese and international artists who have undertaken residencies in China shared their working experiences and ideas with visitors. The event also drew international cultural professionals engaged in residency research and practice in China. Together, the exhibition’s narrative structure, its works from different decades and the accompanying database gave visitors a fuller, more layered understanding of the role residencies play in the art ecosystem.
The exhibition runs through 1 November 2026. Red Gate Gallery invites all those interested in artist residencies to visit and explore the relationship between residency systems and the development of contemporary art in China.
