Li Yanbo was born in Harbin, the capital of Heilongjiang Province in Northeast China. He has been obsessed with painting since his childhood. He graduated from the Shenyang-based Luxun Art Academy in 1985 and worked for the Harbin Painting Institute.

Glancing at Li’s works, one might catch the sharp contrast between totally irrelevant things juxtaposed with one another. Li says: “When a number of words with irrelevant meanings are put together, they sometimes make a strange sense, which of course varies with different readers. It is the same when two irrelevant images are put together in a painting and forced to have relations with each other. They create certain moods and implications that appeal to some viewers. I’m experimenting with such kind of means.”
