Red Gate Gallery is honored to present Heartbeat on the Edge – 10 Songzhuang Artists, opening on May 10. Curated by Zhang Weilin, the exhibition highlights ten artists who migrated and settled in Songzhuang from outside Beijing, exploring their diverse artistic outlooks and personal creative expressions.
红门画廊荣幸呈现群展《边缘的中心 – 10 位宋庄艺术家》(Heartbeat on the Edge – 10 Songzhuang Artists), 5 月 10 日开幕。展览由张惟粼担任策展人,聚焦 10 位异地移居北京宋庄创作与生活的艺术家,探讨创作者们多样的艺术面貌与个人表达。
Foreword 展览前言
Geography often places us on the periphery, but the spirit often chooses its own center. In the nineteenth century, the village of Barbizon on the outskirts of Paris embraced Rousseau and Millet, who had grown weary of industrializing urban life. There, in what was mockingly called a place of “corn boiling and dirty bed sheets,” the most thunderous cries of realist art emerged, temporarily shifting the center of the art world away from the salons along the Seine. History has a way of repeating itself. In contemporary China, the most concrete embodiment of this dialectic—the deconstruction and reconstruction of the “center” by the “edge”—is a place called Songzhuang.
More than thirty years ago, when the pioneers of the Yuanmingyuan Artist Village migrated north like migratory birds to this quiet, river-wrapped land, a subtle dialectic of “drift” and “gathering” quietly took effect. Beginning in 1994, when Fang Lijun, Yue Minjun, and other early artists settled in Xiaobao Village, Songzhuang ceased to be just another coordinate on an administrative map and became a spiritual phenomenon. It was a enclave beyond the mainstream gaze, an “outlaw” territory—what Deleuze and Guattari might call a “war machine” against the state apparatus. Yet it was precisely this geographical marginality that gave Songzhuang its unique power: distance from the center generated a centrifugal force of thought, allowing art to shed the constraints of capital and power and to grow wildly on free soil.
Today, when we speak of “the center on the edge,” we refer not only to the geographical character of the Songzhuang art district but also to a deeper aesthetic-anthropological declaration. Those margins long obscured by central discourse possess a remarkable energy to disrupt established distributions of the sensible. Standing among more than 7,000 restless souls and over 5,000 studios in what has become the world’s largest artist community, we realize that the true center has never possessed fixed coordinates. It appears wherever courage breaks the rules.
This exhibition casts a spotlight on ten stylistically diverse young artists. They are the most vital cells in Songzhuang’s sprawling ecological system. Unlike the previous generation, which struggled within grand narratives, these artists belong to a generation born global. Their vision transcends East-West geographical divides, yet their expression returns to a deeply individual microcosm.
边缘的中心
——写给宋庄的青年艺术家们
地理上的边缘,往往孕育着精神上的中心。正如十九世纪巴黎郊外的巴比松村,接纳了厌倦城市工业化的卢梭、米勒,在那个被讽刺为“煮老玉米、洗脏床单”的边陲之地,竟发出了现实主义艺术最震耳发聩的呐喊,让世界艺术的中心暂时偏离了塞纳河畔的沙龙。历史总是惊人的相似,这种“边缘”对“中心”的祛魅与重构,在当代中国,有一个最具象的注脚——宋庄。
三十多年前,当圆明园画家村的那批拓荒者像候鸟一样北迁至这片潮白河与温榆河环绕的宁静村落时,一种关于“游离”与“凝聚”的辩证法便悄然生效。从1994年方力钧、岳敏君等首批艺术家入驻小堡村开始,这里便不再是行政地图上的一个普通坐标,而演变成了一种精神现象。它曾是主流视野之外的一片“飞地”,是体制外的“江湖”,是德勒兹笔下那个对抗“国家装置”的“战争机器”。然而,正是这种物理距离的“边缘性”,赋予了宋庄一种独特的魔力——空间的距离产生了思想的离心力,让艺术得以摆脱资本与权力的裹挟,在自由的土地上野蛮生长。
今天我们谈论“边缘的中心”,不仅是对宋庄艺术区地缘特征的描述,更是一种深层次的审美人类学宣言。正如马克思主义审美人类学所揭示的,那些长期被遮蔽在中心话语之外的“边缘”,恰恰拥有扰动既定感性分配秩序的巨大能量。当我们置身于这个全球规模最大的艺术家聚集区,面对这7000多个跳动的灵魂和5000多间工作室,我们发现,真正的中心从未有过固定的经纬度,它存在于每一次打破常规的勇气之中。
在这个展览中,我试图将聚光灯打向十位风格迥异的青年艺术家。他们是宋庄庞杂生态系中最具活力的细胞。与上一代在宏大叙事中挣扎的艺术家不同,他们是“天生全球化”的一代,视野跨越了东西方的地理界限,但在表达上,却回归到了极其个体化的“微观宇宙”。
About the Curator 关于策展人
Zhang Weilin is an international art dealer, curator, and cultural industry investor. Having lived extensively in Canada, France, and the United Kingdom, he brings a cross-cultural perspective and a professional background in finance to the art world. Since 2022, he has crossed over into contemporary art, focusing on discovering, supporting, and promoting the community of young artists in Songzhuang.
张惟粼,国际艺术代理、策展人、文化产业投资人。曾长期生活于加拿大、法国、英国,具备跨文化视野与专业金融背景。自2022年起跨界进入当代艺术领域,专注于发掘、支持与推广宋庄的青年艺术家群体。

Artist Statement 艺术家自述
《时间切片》源于《种子计划》中 “我见、我闻” 的个体经验,进而转向对生命、基因与传承的深层追问,更尝试站在更高维度思考艺术与时空的关联 —— 时空,这个无形的容器,承载了所有生命的生灭与悲欢。艺术作为人类精神的凝结,其本质是否就是试图捕捉这不可见的 “时空(时间与空间)”?
关于空间:受卢齐欧・封塔纳 “割破画布” 启发,我同样打破绘画的平面幻象,但哲学指向截然不同 —— 封塔纳以切割引向超验虚空,我则反其道而行之。通过构建凹凸不平的实体层积,我将观众拉回物质本身。在不规则媒介上绘画,既是对极少主义 “去物质化” 的反叛,也是对观念艺术过度抽象化的平衡;而不规则(凹凸)媒介则通过构建实体空间,将观众拉回物质本身的在场性,如边界效应对现实空间的侵略造成的空间气场的变化,以及从 “描绘空间” 到 “占据空间” 的转变。
关于时间:想要让时间 “显影”。放弃对画面表象的修饰,转而专注于 “层” 的构建。颜料不再是描绘物象的工具,而是一层层沉积的岁月。我一遍遍地涂抹、覆盖,如同大地在亿万年地质运动中形成千层岩,又如同树木在寒来暑往中刻下年轮。这些层积并非随意堆叠,每一层颜料都封存着一个瞬间的决定、一次呼吸的停顿,它们累积、挤压,形成了厚重的物质性,是由无数个过去的时间堆叠而成的实体。仅有层积还不够,时间这一隐形的维度需要被 “看见”。切割画布的同时,也剖开了时间的腹部:画布表面的幻象被撕裂,侧面暴露出丰富色层,原本隐形的 “时间” 终于有了形状。它不再是抽象的流逝,而是具象、可触摸的色带,是过去与现在的并置,是记忆的横截面。作品剥离了复杂的叙事与技巧,只留下物质本身在时间中的生长与变迁。观众不再仅仅是站在画布前 “观看” 一个故事,而是被拉近,去 “凝视” 时间的切口,感受那层层叠叠的岁月重量,将绘画过程中的覆盖、叠加,用切割动作转化为时间与空间的对话。
Time Slices derives from the personal experiences of “I see, I hear” in the Seed Project, evolving into a deeper inquiry into life, genes, and inheritance. It also attempts to contemplate the relationship between art, time, and space from a higher dimension — time and space, this invisible container, holds all life’s births, deaths, joys, and sorrows. As a crystallization of human spirit, is the essence of art to capture this invisible “time and space”?
On Space: Inspired by Lucio Fontana’s “slashed canvases”, I also break the illusion of the flat plane, but with a fundamentally different philosophical direction. While Fontana’s cuts point to a transcendental void, I take the opposite approach. By building uneven, layered physical accumulations, I bring the viewer back to matter itself. Painting on irregular media is both a rebellion against Minimalism’s “dematerialization” and a balance against the excessive abstraction of conceptual art. The irregular (uneven) medium constructs physical space, returning the viewer to the presence of matter itself — such as the change in spatial aura caused by the invasion of boundary effects into real space, and the shift from “depicting space” to “occupying space”.
On Time: I aim to “develop” time. Abandoning surface embellishment, I focus on building “layers”. Paint is no longer a tool for depicting objects, but accumulated years. I repeatedly apply and cover, just as the earth forms rock strata over millions of years of geological movement, or as trees carve annual rings through the seasons. These layers are not random stacks; each layer of paint preserves a split-second decision, a pause in breath. They accumulate and compress, forming a heavy materiality — an entity composed of countless moments of the past. Layers alone are not enough; the invisible dimension of time needs to be “seen”. Cutting the canvas also cuts open the belly of time: the illusion of the surface is torn, revealing rich color layers on the side, and the once invisible “time” finally takes shape. It is no longer abstract passage, but concrete, touchable bands of color, a juxtaposition of past and present, a cross-section of memory. Stripped of complex narratives and techniques, the work leaves only the growth and transformation of matter itself in time. The viewer no longer merely “watches” a story from in front of the canvas, but is drawn closer to “gaze” at the incision of time, feeling the weight of layered years. The overlapping and covering in the painting process are transformed into a dialogue between time and space through the act of cutting.

Artist Statement 艺术家自述
以自由为名,鲲鹏虽未直接出现在《山海经》,却是《庄子》中借鉴山海神话体系的伟大创造。其“鹏之徙于南冥也,水击三千里,抟扶摇而上者九万里”的雄浑气势,体现了华夏文明对自由和超越的向往。鲲鹏之变(由鱼化鸟)暗示着形态可变、境界可升的哲学思想,鼓励着人们突破自我局限,追求更高境界。
Though the Kun and Peng do not directly appear in Shan Hai Jing, they stand as a magnificent creation in Zhuangzi, drawing on the mythological system of mountain and sea legends.
The imposing vision of “When the Peng migrates to the southern abyss, it strikes the water for three thousand li, then soars upward on swirling winds for ninety thousand li” embodies the Chinese civilization’s eternal yearning for freedom and transcendence.
The metamorphosis from giant fish to divine bird implies an oriental philosophy of mutable form and elevated realm, inspiring people to break through boundaries, transcend limitations, and pursue a higher spiritual dimension.

《别后不知君远近》Distance Unseen After Farewell
From Ouyang Xiu’s poem Yulouchun Biehou Buzhi Jun Yuanjin: Since we parted, I know not your distance; all I see is dreariness. You drift farther, no letters come. Waters wide, messages sunk – where to seek you?
After separation, our paths diverge. I truly know not where you are or how you fare. Admitting this uncertainty, not forcing contact or answers, is respect for fate. Unawareness begins letting go, holding a gentle acceptance—I accept our separation. Most worldly sorrows come from craving to know and control.
Distance is never geographical, but a state of mind. You may not know how far he is, yet he may never leave your thoughts—you just no longer cling to inquiries. With your departure, heaven and earth become truly real.
出自宋代欧阳修的词《玉楼春·别后不知君远近》:别后不知君远近,触目凄凉多少闷。渐行渐远渐无书,水阔鱼沉何处问。
分离之后,你我的路径各自展开,我确实不知道你在哪里、你过得好不好。承认“不知”,而不是强求知道或强行联系,这是对缘分的尊重。“不知”恰恰是一种放下的开始,“不知”里,藏着一种温柔的认命——我接受我们失散了。世间很多痛苦,恰恰源于“想要知道”“想要掌控”。
远近从来不是地理概念,而是心念。你不知道他在多远之外,但也许他从未离开你的呼吸之间——只是你不再执着去打听了。你走了,天地反而变得无比真实。
《杳》Remote
After parting, all your traces and news fade, leaving only boundless emptiness—embodying “not knowing where you are”, “no news or letters”, “vanishing from sight”. Sorrow comes from clinging to “possession”: his whereabouts, messages, tangible presence. From the Buddhist view of Dependent Origination and Emptiness, all phenomena have no inherent nature; impermanence of gathering and separation is the truth.
分离后,你的踪影与音信都杳然,天地间只余空阔。“不知你在何处”“没有消息,没有书信往来”“茫茫不可见”的全部意味。你感到失落,是因为曾执着于“有”——有他的行踪、音信、可见的实体。而禅观“缘起性空”会发现,一切现象本无自性,聚散无常才是真相。
《照见》Enlightenment
Once, faced with silence, you’d search, wait, guess relentlessly. But when inner revelation comes, you turn inward—instead of chasing the vanishing shadow, you see the self-feeling this emptiness. This turn is the path to awakening.
Inner revelation tears a crack through ignorance. Even for a moment, you don’t drown in loss and confusion from silence but observe calmly. With practice, the crack widens until subject and object merge.
Before revelation, emptiness is suffering.
After revolution, emptiness is the gateway to enlightenment.
The strength to open this gate is awareness. Observe mindfully at every moment, this is cultivation after enlightenment, true awakening.
以往遇到“杳”,你会拼命找、等、猜。而照见一发生,你第一次回过了头,不是去追那个消失的影子,而是看清“正在感受杳然的是谁”。这一转身,就是觉醒的方向。
你的“照见”——它从无明里撕开一道缝。哪怕只是一刹那,你不被“杳然”带来的失落、茫然卷走,而是静静地看着那一刹那,反复练习,那道缝会越来越大,直到能所双亡。
照见之前,杳是苦。
照见之后,杳是门。
而推开门的那个力气,就叫“觉”。从这一个开始,念念照见下去,便是悟后起修,便是觉醒。

Artist Statement 艺术家自述
作品创作手法以绳絮沾取颜料,借弹拨力道让色彩垂落交织。
画面竖线错落疏密,还原石窟岩壁历经时光侵蚀的纵向斑驳纹理;整幅色调严格溯源古代洞窟壁画,沉郁赭红、复古青灰、幽紫墨色交织相融,把千年洞窟里沉淀的苍茫古意、岁月风化的厚重质感,藏进纯粹的抽象线条韵律之中,让古老壁画的色彩灵魂,在当代抽象艺术里新生。
作品以绳弹垂线作画,视觉逻辑同源极简主义音乐。连绵重复的纵向线条,如同极简乐恒定循环的音型节奏;洞窟古壁画衍生的层次色调,对应乐曲缓慢氤氲的和声音色。无繁杂叙事、无剧烈起伏,以纯粹重复与微妙渐变,复刻石窟千年静谧时空,用视觉韵律演绎空灵悠远的冥想式意境,让画面如极简乐章一般,在绵延往复里沉淀永恒的时间诗意。
I dip rope fibers in pigments, plucking with controlled force to let colours drip and interweave across the canvas.
Scattered vertical lines vary in density and spacing, recreating the vertical mottled textures of grotto rock walls eroded by time. The overall colour palette draws strictly from ancient cave murals: somber ochre reds, vintage teal greys, and muted indigo inks blend and merge. The vast ancient aura accumulated over millennia in grottoes, along with the weight of weathered time, is encapsulated within the rhythmic flow of pure abstract lines—reviving the chromatic spirit of ancient murals through contemporary abstract art.
Painted with vertical strokes flicked from taut ropes, the work shares the same visual logic as minimalist music. Continuous, repetitive vertical lines echo the constant, looping rhythmic patterns of minimalist compositions; layered hues derived from ancient cave art correspond to the slow, diffused harmonic tones of instrumental pieces. Devoid of intricate narratives and dramatic fluctuations, it relies on pure repetition and subtle gradations to recreate the serene, timeless space of ancient grottoes. Through visual rhythm, it evokes an ethereal, meditative mood. Much like a minimalist movement, the painting settles into an eternal poetics of time within endless, flowing cycles.

Artist Statement 艺术家自述
我觉得在创作的时候,我处于控制和被控制之中,画面也由此组成。被控制时像失控,而我 在和失控较劲,失控又给我带来惊喜。失控,更像一个贬义词,是一个不严谨、一个冲动带 来的后果,同生活一般充斥了不确定性。而正是这个不确定带给我们更多的快乐,创作亦是 如此,我在失控和控制之间寻找快乐。
I believe during the creative process, I dwell between control and being controlled—and this very tension shapes the artwork. When yielding to being controlled, I teeter into loss of control; I constantly wrestle with this chaos, yet it also brings unexpected surprises.
Loss of control often bears a derogatory connotation, seen as the result of recklessness and impulse. Much like life itself, it is filled with uncertainty. Yet it is this uncertainty that grants us profound joy, and creation is no exception. I find my pleasure lingering between control and chaos.

Artist Statement 艺术家自述
巴别塔The Tower of Babel
借用名画巴别塔的图式,运用线条的多层重叠产生出了一定的肌理效果;同时色层间的相互影响也有了独特的色彩感受。巴别塔有它特定的思想内涵,接合独特的表现手法,营造出一种别样画面氛围。
Drawing on the pictorial motif of the classic painting The Tower of Babel, the work adopts multi-layered overlapping lines to form a distinct texture effect. Meanwhile, the interaction between color layers delivers a unique chromatic perception. Rooted in the inherent ideological connotation of the Tower of Babel, combined with expressive and personalized painting techniques, the piece constructs a distinctive visual atmosphere.
爱神维纳斯 Venus
作品借用古希腊雕塑维纳斯的形象,运用线条层层叠加的创作方式,制造出色彩的闪烁感与空间的幻像,有序的线条排列与层层的肌理效果让画面产生无限的空间想像。
This work borrows the iconography of the ancient Greek sculpture Venus. Through the superposition of layered lines, it creates flickering color visuals and illusory spatial effects. The orderly arrangement of lines and rich layered textures endow the painting with boundless spatial imagination.
